The “Thousand Falls Table”
When Kara and I first met, I would go to her house, and if we sat down to watch a movie, there was nowhere for me to put a drink. She did not have end tables because her living room was small. I would set my glass down on the floor, and the dogs would come sniff at my cup. I offered to make her a table, to which she motioned around the room and asked, “Where would I put a table?”
I went home, and started looking around my shop to see what wood I had on hand. A bit of oak, a few scraps of maple and even less cherry. Perfect, very little space and very little wood. I came up with a design, and went to my living room to take a few measurements.
The next time I went to see Kara, I had my creation in my hand. Its height comes to just above the arm of the couch and the base tucks under the bottom, taking up no additional space in the room. It fits a drink, a cell phone, and a couple of remotes.
I named it the “thousand falls table” because over the past 6 years, the table has been knocked over by children, robotic vacuums, dogs, and my clumsy self over and over again. It is no worse for wear and is holding up great.
Made of Red Oak, with maple ends and a cherry racing stripe, Joined with a tenon and dowels at both ends, this table is built to last and can take as much abuse as a family can throw at it. I love my “thousand falls table”, and per my now wife’s request, I have more to make.
